# Our Mission

The origin of the Justice and Protection Alliance

**Every survivor who walks through our door has already fought one of the hardest
battles imaginable — the battle to leave.**

They walked away from families, communities, and the only world they ever knew.
They did so without money, without legal protection, and often without anyone standing
beside them.

That is why the Justice and Protection Alliance exists.

## How We Started

The JPA was formed in 2025 by people who had spent decades working in and around
these issues: volunteer attorneys who represented survivors pro bono for years before
there was any organization behind them; former Utah legislators who fought to change
the laws; experienced criminal investigators who had followed these cases from the
inside; citizen advocates who simply refused to look away.

At some point, they all arrived at the same conclusion: individual effort was not
enough. The problems were institutional. They required an institutional response.

## What We Do

JPA supports civil lawsuits brought by survivors of religious extremism — men and
women who were trafficked, abused, exploited, or stripped of their property and
their children by groups operating behind a shield of religious doctrine. We cover
the real costs of litigation: expert fees, travel costs for plaintiffs and witnesses,
filing costs, and the operational expenses that keep these cases moving. All legal
representation is provided on a pro bono basis. Our clients pay nothing for their
attorneys.

We also do the work that happens outside courtrooms: public awareness campaigns,
media outreach, survivor advocacy, and pushing for legislative change that will
protect the next generation of children before they ever need a lawyer.

## Who We Support

Our active cases involve survivors from three distinct groups: the Kingston Group(
known to members as “the Order”), the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB), and the FLDS.
Each group is different. Each case is different. The common thread is the same:
vulnerable people — most of them women and children — harmed by institutions that
used religion as cover, and who deserve their day in court.

## What We Believe

Religious freedom is real and important. It does not include the right to traffic
children, steal wages, or isolate vulnerable people from the legal system. Those
two things are not in conflict. We hold that line.

If you believe every survivor deserves a fair fight, [consider supporting our work.](https://justprotect.org/donate/)
